GMOs are killing us: Facts you probably don’t know

You’ve probably heard that GMOs are bad, and that’s absolutely accurate – but it’s also an oversimplification. It’s not like high fructose corn syrup, a toxic ingredient that you can easily avoid by not purchasing foods that are made with it. The problem is far more complex and insidious, and it’s killing people and animals every day.

When we talk about GMOs, we are referring to genetically modified organisms. This can be a plant, a microorganism or even an animal – it’s anything with DNA that has been modified via genetic engineering or transgenic technology to create something new that does not occur in nature.

Ladybug swarm detected by weather radar over Southern California

The government's NEXRAD radar is so sensitive that it often picks up birds, bugs, bats and lots of other stuff meteorologists call "angels."

You could see the angels flying over Southern California on Tuesday night.

When National Weather Service radar picked up a giant blob moving swiftly over southwestern San Bernardino County, east of Los Angeles, around 8 p.m., forecasters at the agency's San Diego office called spotters on the ground, who told them it was an enormous swarm of ladybugs.

Do People With Pets Live Longer?

Pets offer love, companionship and even exercise if you’ve got a dog that needs to get outdoors every day. They're family, no doubt about it, but can they actually help extend your life?

The verdict on whether pets can help you live longer is a bit astonishing, even to the researchers who discovered it. University of California, Riverside health researchers Howard Friedman and Leslie Martin analyzed data collected from an 80-year study of 1,500 people. The study, initiated in 1921 by psychologist Lewis Terman, is one of the only long-term studies that follow people from their childhood onward.

Two Possible Reasons Dogs Live Longer in Europe...

In part 2 of my interview with Ted, we discussed how being the 'alpha' in your relationship with your dog may create a lack of freedom, an inequality, for your pet that can increase stress hormones and impact his health.

We also talked about the ingenious way Ted tracks his dog Pukka when he's not with him. Pukka is one lucky dog – he has the freedom to come and go from Ted's home as he sees fit, using the dog door Ted installed for his previous canine companion, Merle.

New dog food recall and the latest warning on grain-free foods

Hill’s Pet Nutrition has joined other dog food companies in voluntarily recalling brands of pet food that may be too high in vitamin D, which can damage kidneys. Meanwhile, researchers at UC Davis have published a study that appears to link grain-free and legume-rich foods to canine heart disease.

Hill’s, which makes a line of prescription foods sold at pet food stores and veterinary offices, blames the elevated levels of vitamin D on its supplier, saying it learned of a potential problem after receiving a complaint about a dog that showed signs of elevated vitamin D levels.

After investigating, the company confirmed “elevated levels of vitamin D due to a supplier error.” Hill’s is working with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration on the recall, which involves 25 products and specific lots of Hill’s Prescription Diet adult and puppy foods.

Dogs understand our words and meaning

For those who might not have seen it, Hungarian researchers trained dogs to sit motionless in an MRI scanner while they monitored their brain activity as they heard certain words and phrases.

The scientists discovered that, just like humans, dogs use the left side of their brain to recognize the meaning of the words and the right side to comprehend the emotion or tone.

Researchers, and dog owners, have long known that dogs can acquire an impressive vocabulary, able to associate a word with an object. My dog, for instance, runs to the dining room window and barks like crazy if I say the word “cat.” He’ll run to the front window if I say “mailman,” and he’ll hound me for snacks if I say the word “treat.”
